Hi from Col the Sweep
Permalink

Just a quick hello to introduce myself. I did the training course back in October & completed my assessment last Friday (not sure what I was worried about!).

I am new to sweeping having been in engineering most of my life.

I am based in Leeds & will be working Leeds & West Yorkshire area & initially will be just concentrating on sweeping & basic repairs. I do not intend to fit cowls, so If anyone is interested to take that on on my behalf please let me know.

I dont mind going up ladders but stepping off at the top is a different matter!!

I completed my first sweep yesterday on a friends house. 2 hours later & a vac full of soot I completed the sweep, but not without issues & further work to do which I am looking for advice on. (I will post seperately).

It is the friendliness & helpfulness that made me decide to come to the Guild.

Looking forward to getting more sweeps under my belt & contributing to the forum.

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin, congratulations on completing the assesssment. What sort of engineering did you do and are you giving it up straight away?

Welcome Colin, there's a few ex engineers here, myself included. I was a Production engineer for 10 years. Ditto what Jules said. I'm sure you will find someone who'll be happy to take up your roof work.

Hi Guys,

I gave engineering up a while ago, I worked at Vickers Defence Systems as a project engineer/draughtsman for 20 years. My last job was an estimator at Camerons (OneSubsea oil industry) until I was made redundant  Which is why I was looking at chimney sweeping to take me up to retirement! 10 years to go! If the body holds out!

Welcome to the Guild Colin. As members we all run our own business' but we all have the support and back up of other sweeps either a sweep close to you or a phone call away.  The forum is a brilliant tool to use for us all I just wished more would use it.  Good luck For your first season.

I'm sure they won't all be like that Colin, most will be better, some may be worse. smile smile

One day I may publish the details of my "first day". After a few hours I began to wonder if I'd been set up to see if I'd stay the course.

Ha ha, yes I have had similar thoughts, & it did also take me over 2 hours to do my first stove!
