Hello, I'm totally new to sweeping and I only passed out in December having done the November training course. I am thoroughly enjoying it so far and am so pleased there is a forum where newbies can come for help and advice. I come from an Industrial Cleaning background where I mostly deep clean commercial kitchens and their extraction systems. I am now excited about pushing forward the sweeping side of my business. I'm also looking forward to meeting some of you guys at the next AGM. When is that by the way?

Hi Trev,
You'll find the AGM details in a section on here. I think its July 12th? better book now if you want a room though.
Good luck with sweeping , and just ask, don't rush, and better to lose a bit of money time wise learning the ropes.. we areall still learning from each other.

Ha ha! That's fine I love it!! Yes Mark Hagon I was on the course with Chris Lee. Hope he is well?

So I'm looking at getting a roof ladder. Something light preferably. I won't be getting too involved but something like aerial installers use. I looked at a make called zarges who do a really light 3.5 metre extending too just under 6 metres. Lyte also do that size but they also do a 3 metre extending up to 4.64 which I like the idea of but not sure if it's long enough.
I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this matter??

The only qualification for joining the banter is to strip down ,sweep and pull back together your first AGA Little Wenlock
And tell us your opinion of them .

ref ladders - I've had a set of extending roof ladders for some time but find them really heavy lugging on and off the roof. i've just invested in a set of ability roof ladders (made by Clow ladders). they are single section so nice and light, but extendible with additional sections. i've bought a 3m ladder with 2m and 1m extension so max possible 6m run. so far, pleased as punch. 

plus, if you need to go longer, just buy additional section or borrow from someone here who has one.

I've heard about these wenlocks before. So I take it they wasn't designed with the chimney sweep in mind? Any tips (apart from run a mile!)

Read all you want mate it still won't prepare you, I did one a about 6 weeks ago, getting the baffle out was bad enough, getting it back in was a nightmare. All I will say is if you get one, book it as the last job of the day, you will need a stiff drink afterwards.

I have some kit which allows me to sweep these without removing the throat plate. Also works if there is rear flue outlet. Only works if there is no tough tar in flue. Anyone want the details??

I wouldn't have a "LW" but I don't mind sweeping them ... the most annoying thing I find with them is when I forget to replace those silly protection plates on the baffle after replacing the side bricks..

It's not about avoiding Trevor its just a big learning curve.
Ask the right questions when booking jobs in.
Find out who the good and bad fitters are in your area,
Have the right tools for the right flue,
Never price a job cheap as they are the ones that will bite you in the ass

Magnus is one of the good guys so pop your head round the door and say hi.
Have a look at his stock and ask if you can take some baffles out ( and back in)

bit late in the welcome but have just discovered the recent posts tab (doh!) great to have you aboard. I've just read the thread and it contains all that is good about the Guild. Great advice, people who seem genuinely interested in us all getting better, good banter and, for me, a great feeling of confidence that I have great back up.

Dave's from Yorkshire and refund is removed from their dictionary lol.

A good bit of banter helps you, plus there are people on here who want to help you.

I use a sectional crawler from Midland ladders, which is light enough.

Hi Trev,

Belated welcome, you will find the forum excellent, I do!

I googled the Wenlock, and realised I am not a 'Wenlock virgin' as I did one a few weeks ago. My advice would be not to wear rubber gloves as when I took them off, I had sweated so much with the stress of doing the job, that I sprayed sweat all over the customer as the gloves pinged off my finger tips!! Not my finest hour.....
